The establishment of the Department of Biology within the Faculty of Science at Dokuz Eylül University was reviewed and approved during the Executive Board meeting of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) on June 1, 1998. However, although the department was officially established in 1998, it remained inactive until 2010 due to a lack of faculty appointments during those years.
Post-2010, the number of permanent faculty members reached a sufficient level. Furthermore, through funding from TÜBİTAK and university-funded Scientific Research Projects (BAP), the infrastructure and laboratory equipment were developed to a standard suitable for education and research. As a result of these advancements, the Department of Biology launched its Undergraduate program in the 2016-2017 academic year, its Master’s program in 2019-2020, and its Ph.D.program in 2023-2024.
The department consists of four main branches: Botany, General Biology, Zoology, and Molecular Biology. Currently, there are 14 academic staff members, including:
6 Professors
5 Associate Professors
1 Assistant Professor (Dr. Lecturer)
2 Research Assistants
